earth has hot, hot holes

one of them is in Turkmenistan and has been deemed “The Door to Hell.”

this hole has been burning nonstop for over 40 years!!

Soviet geologists were drilling at the site in 1971 and tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. But the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a hole with a diameter of 70 metres. Fearing that the hole would lead to the release of poisonous gases, the team decided to burn it off. The hole is located in Derweze, in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan It was hoped that the fire would use all the fuel within days, but the gas is still burning today.

another hot hole, maybe even the hottest, is at the top of mount marum on ambrym island in the south pacific ocean. it’s a pool of 1,150 degree lava.

the guy in the picture, geoff mackley, made a 15 year old dream come true by descending into the crater to up close and personal to the lava pool. like really close. like 30 meters close!! THAT, folks, is NUTS!

there’s a great article about it here.

if you don’t read the article, you must at least watch the video because it is one of the craziest things you’ll ever see!
